“Perspective” showcases the artform of clay 3D printing.
After the loss of a friend, the hourglass shape and the concept of time was in the forefront of the artist’s mind.
A digital model of an hourglass incorporates a mirrored composition revealing how an identical design that is 3D printed in clay can be manipulated by gravity and the unpredictability of the material.
The technique of keeping the clay form from collapsing and completely warping during the 3D printing process is done with the distribution of heat. Placing the delicate 3D printed rings in limbo is done midway during this process – a careful balancing act, as the white underglaze painted rings may not touch the wet clay of the 3D print.
Using only colours reminiscent of the friend, a mixture of rose blush and white underglazes is hand painted onto the coiled body comprising of multiple layers with the hand dipped berry glaze finishing off the smoothed bottom of the form.
With no bottom, the form can be flipped, exactly like the hourglass itself. The rings remain loose but are unable to be separated from the clay body and remain trapped.
