This week I thought I’d share with you this wonderful video about a South African potter and longtime friend, Digby Hoets.
As friends, Digby and I go back to the early 1970’s when I managed Kolonyama Pottery in Lesotho, Southern Africa. It was a 4hour drive from Lesotho to Johannesburg, SA where Digby’s huge and impressive teaching & private studio was located. And I made that drive often. In those years he provided studio space and instructional classes for budding potters – possibly the only facility of its kind at the time.
Since then, Digby has become an extraordinary maker of large garden pots, filling a need that exists in the beautiful, floral-filled country of South Africa. He’s doing less teaching these days but still provides studio space for a host of area potters in his incredible facility.
And now, Digby’s reputation is going worldwide as he sends his enormous pots to all corners of the world… including the USA.
He’s a masterful clay worker and an exceptional human being. I’m grateful to have him and wife Penny as friends.
And, I present to you… Digby Hoets.
Stay dirty, my clay friends,
Bill
